Map view vs List view

Updated: Dec 17, 2021

Let me ask you this, when you go on Airbnb, do you use their "map view" or "list view"?

I think almost everyone would say "map view". That is because 90 percent of information transmitted to the brain is visual, and the human brain processes images 60,000 times faster than text.

When it comes to location-based information like a list of places, events, accommodation or restaurants, maps are the best visual aids. Yet i am still seeing website after website with text lists of "places".

Ted and I have been working with mapping APIs for a few years now. One of the biggest lessons we have learned is that building a custom map tool is not easy, and if you want to make it agency-quality with custom filters, it could become very expensive very quickly.

In my earlier post, I made a summary of a list of existing custom map builders. In our opinion, the existing custom map building software have two main issues:

  1. Outdated designs - most of them are at least 6-7 years old which means all of their custom maps actually look and feel like they are from the mid-2010;

  2. Generic filters - most of these custom map creators were designed to make it easy for the audience to visualise the data as opposed to interact with the data. This means they may have a lot of drawing tools so you can make your infographic map more informative, but when it comes to functions that can actually interact with your users like filters and call-to-action functions, most of them only offer generic options if at all.

With our custom map maker, we are focused on maximising audience engagement and interaction. This is why when we designed our templates, we did extensive research and talked to real businesses from different industries so we know what are the key filters and call-to-action buttons to include for each template.

This is why we are a custom map tool builder as opposed to a custom map builder, because our custom map tools are beyond just informative, they are actually interactive and engaging. The custom interactive maps and map tools you make on our platform will rival the ones you see on industry leaders' websites, in terms of both the design and functionality.

With our platform, anyone would be able to build agency-quality, engaging map tools with just your spreadsheet, no coding required.

The key is our library of ready-to-use templates curated for a variety of use cases and industries. Each template is made up of:

  • sleek, modern design

  • industry-tailored filters, and

  • custom call-to-action buttons.

Other words, we will do 80% of the work, you just need to bring your data and style!

If it all sounds good to you, then please stay tuned!
