As I continue our market research, I came across some very interesting facts and figures on Google Maps. For our last blog post of the year, I thought would share these interesting findings.
Google Maps holds the top spot as the preferred navigation application on both Android and Apple platforms, boasting over 10 billion downloads from the Google Play Store, underscoring its dominance in navigation solutions across major mobile operating systems.
Ranking as the third most downloaded Google application globally, Google Maps is only preceded by YouTube and YouTube Kids as of September 2023.
With over 1 billion monthly active users, Google Maps’ universal compatibility across devices, including Android and Apple, sets it apart from Apple Maps and explains its vast user base.
With the integration of Google Business into Maps, over 200 million businesses and places have been listed on Google Maps as of 2023, showcasing its extensive directory.
With over 10,000 indoor maps, Google Maps provides insights into buildings’ layouts and floor plans, enhancing navigation experiences indoors through partnerships with numerous locations.
Estimated by Morgan Stanley, Google Maps’ revenue reached $11.1 billion in 2023, marking its transformation into a utility-like service. This represents a significant growth from $3 billion in 2019, with a large portion of this revenue originating from the U.S., accounting for 16.5% in 2022.
According to Builtwith, almost 5 million live websites are using Google Maps API, within 2 million in the US alone.
With the introduction of Live View, an augmented reality feature, users can explore routes and surroundings with directional arrows overlaid in real-time on their phone camera. This feature has expanded to over 50 cities worldwide, enhancing the user experience.
Localized ads and promoted pins drive substantial foot traffic to local businesses, with studies showing that 25% of Google Maps queries include business names. This demonstrates the platform’s influence in shaping consumer behavior.
User demographics reveal that 28.55% of Google Maps users are aged 25–34, followed by 22% aged 35–44. Interestingly, only 6.63% of users are aged 65 and above, showcasing the app’s appeal to a younger demographic.
